Self-Pace On-Demand Study or Instructor-Led Training
Why I Chose Self-Study, On-Demand APICS Certification Over Instructor-Led Training …from someone who has taught hundreds of instructor-led courses

I want to share my story as a supply chain professional and someone on both sides of the classroom.
Over the years, I've taught hundreds of instructor-led APICS certification courses—virtual, in-person, public, and private. I know their value. I've seen firsthand how they help learners gain confidence, stay on track, and pass tough exams. But when it came to my certifications and certificates—whether it was CPIM, CSCP, CLTD, CTSC, or even PMI - Project Management Professional —I chose a different path:
Self-paced, on-demand learning.
1. Every APICS Certification I've Earned Was Through Self-Study
That's right. I earned every APICS certification and certificate I've earned—yes, all of them—through a self-paced, on-demand format.
Why does it work? I like having control over my learning schedule. I prefer pausing, rewinding, and revisiting content without waiting for the next class. I want to go deep—on my terms.
2. Self-Study Costs Half as Much—Sometimes Less
Let's get practical. Instructor-led training—primarily when delivered by APICS Fellows or Master Instructors (like myself)—isn't cheap. And for good reason: it includes coaching, case studies, structured guidance, and live Q&A.
But if you're disciplined and don't require that support, self-study can cost 50–60% less. In fact, for most APICS courses, you're looking at $950–$1,400 compared to $2,500–$3,200 for instructor-led training.
The savings are actual. And for independent learners, the ROI is just as strong.
3. 24/7 Access Fit My Busy Lifestyle
As someone who runs a business, develops training programs, and manages a full plate, I needed a learning format that worked around my schedule—not the other way around.
With self-study, I could log in anytime—early in the morning, late at night, or during a quiet weekend. That kind of flexibility is golden when your calendar fills up quickly.
4. I Could Deep-Dive into the Content Where It Mattered
Self-paced learning allowed me to explore the most challenging or interesting topics in depth. If I needed more time on global sourcing strategies or inventory policy logic, I could rewatch the videos, retake the quizzes, and slow down.
In an instructor-led course, the pace is preset. With self-study, the control is all yours.
5. I Finished Faster Than I Would Have in a Class
Most instructor-led APICS courses last 10 to 14 weeks. However, I've completed certifications with self-study in as little as 5 to 6 weeks.
I moved as quickly as my schedule—and understanding—allowed—no waiting for the next session. No delays.
Not Everyone Is Wired for Self-Study—and That's OK Let me be clear: Self-study isn't for everyone. Many professionals need the accountability, structure, and real-time feedback of an instructor-led class, and that's completely valid. That's why I teach live courses yearly—they're incredibly effective for the right learners.
But for independent learners, busy professionals, and self-motivated go-getters, self-study is not just the budget-friendly choice. It's the bright, efficient path to certification.
Final Thought: The Content Is the Same—The Choice Is Yours
Here's the kicker: Both formats—self-study and instructor-led—use the exact APICS Learning System, the same printed materials, and the same exams.
So the question isn't what you'll learn. It's how you want to learn it. For me, self-study was the best fit. It gave me control, saved me time and money, and helped me get certified—on my terms.
